My Moving Home by Rogers Otieno

DURATION: 1 hour 20 minutes

CAST: 5 actors

SYNOPSIS: A story inspired by the upbringing of Rogers Donatus Otieno who moved from his grandparents’ rural home to the urban community of Eastlands, Nairobi. Rogers has to make a choice between protecting his closest friend and his high school love.

LANGUAGE: English/ Swahili/ Sheng.

Shungwaaya devised by the Company

DURATION: 1 hour 20 minutes

CAST: 6 actors

SYNOPSIS: The performance intertwines the contemporary story of Mbodze and Muyeye with the ancient migration mythology of the Mjikenda peoples of the Kenyan Coast, known as the stories of “The Broken Pot”. Through a mixture of drama, dance and music, Shungwaaya examines the links between our mythical past and our modern lives.

LANGUAGE: Kiswahili or English with Kenyan vernacular languages.

Githaa by The Theatre Company

DURATION: 1 hour 30 minutes

SYNOPSIS: Originally devised in 2006, Githaa explore contemporary,

Nairobi street life through the character of Cheptab who migrates to the city, bringing with her vital, rural experiences.

LANGUAGE: English with Kenyan vernacular languages.

STYLE: Dramatic Musical

 

Irodha, Irodhi (Beaten, not Whipped) by The Theatre Company, Kisumu

DURATION: 1 hour 10 minutes

CAST: 7 actors

SYNOPSIS: Created by the Performance Development Group in Kisumu, under the leadership of Rogers Otieno. The piece is set during the period of post-election violence in Kisumu (2008) and tells a personal and communal story through dynamic action, song and comic observation.

LANGUAGE: Swahili/ Dholuo/ English.

STYLE: Dramatic Musical

 

Are We Free Yet?

DURATION: 1 hour 30 minutes

CAST: 7 actors

SYNOPSIS Featuring the play “Are We Here Yet?” by Joshua Muraya which tells the story of two Mau Mau fighters who have remained in the forest; it also features original music and dance by Melissa Ommeh and Ruth Maingi.

LANGUAGE: English (plus Swahili and Kikuyu)
