Want to write the opus? Or you're dying to paint "the masterpiece"? Maybe you just need a change of scene to "re-charge the batteries" ? Why not find your muse at Karichota?

Built by Keith and Mumbi Pearson in 1996, Karichota is situated 150 kms north of Nairobi, just outside the sleepy town of Naro Moru.

The house has three bedrooms, an artist's studio, running water pumped from a large rainwater tank, bath/shower, solar heating and lighting, cutlery and crockery, 4-plate gas cooker with oven and beds with bedding.

The property faces Mount Kenya and is named after the little stream that runs at the bottom of its 10 acres of indigenous forest.

Lawrence Maina, our guide, will build a fire for you and if you're feeling energetic, he'll take you on a nature walk.

Here are some of the questions we get asked about Karichota:

How do I get there?
Send us an email or call Keith on 0722 815112 and we'll send you a map. Karichota is 6 km from Naro Moru town (on the Nanyuki/Isiolo Road). From Nairobi you can travel by matatu to Karatina and then catch one to Nanyuki. The matatus stop on the main road which is 1 kilometre from the house. If you're driving yourself, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is highly recommended during the rainy seasons.

What should I bring?
It's self catering so you need to bring your own food. We also recommend you bring walking shoes, binoculars, a good book, drawing materials, warm clothing for the cool evenings, and sleeping bags.
As there's no fridge at Karichota, we suggest that you don't bring too many perishable food items. Naro Moru and Nanyuki are close enough to go shopping for any food you might need. You can also eat out at the fabulous Trout Tree Restaurant (about a kilometre away on the Nanyuki road) or spend a day at the Mountain Rock Lodge (formerly Bantu Lodge), where they have boat-rides, a children's playground, horses and mountain bikes for hire.

What about hospitals?
Nanyuki, a medium-sized town with hospital, sports club, shops, and airstrip, is located half an hour's drive away.

Karichota is an environmental experiment and we ask that guests do their best to conserve wood, water and electricity during their visit.
